CMMs are highly precise measurement systems, but achieving accurate and repeatable results also depends on how the workpiece is fixtured. Swift-Fix is a fully modular part-holding system from Hexagon designed to help fixture parts for dimensional measurement. This guide explains what Swift-Fix is, how the system works, the components and kits available, and the applications it supports.

What Is Swift-Fix?

Swift-Fix is a fully modular part-holding and fixturing system for coordinate measuring machines (CMMs). It enables operators to securely fixture parts of different shapes, sizes and complexity and can be used with both stationary CMMs and portable measurement arms equipped with tactile, optical or multiple sensors.
The system combines standard base plates with interchangeable fixturing elements that can be quickly assembled to create different fixture configurations. A clear acrylic version is also available for use with vision and optical sensors. Each base plate is labelled alpha-numerically, allowing operators to record and reproduce fixture setups when required.

Swift-Fix Components

Swift-Fix consists of a range of modular fixturing components that can be combined according to the requirements of the measurement setup.
Available components include:

  • Base plates
  • Standoffs
  • Cones
  • Spring clamps
  • Tension clamps
  • Toggle clamps
  • Universal joints
  • Kinematic system (optional)
The standard aluminium base plates are 12 mm thick and feature M8 holes. Attachments can be used to connect multiple plates and create larger fixture plates.
Swift-Fix components are available individually or as part of complete kits.

Swift-Fix Kits

For applications where multiple components are required, Swift-Fix is available in three standard kits: The Bronze kit contains 46 elements for basic fixture assembly, while the Silver kit contains 66 elements. The Gold kit contains 93 components and is designed for larger or more complex workpieces.

Kit Number of components Intended use
Bronze 46 elements Basic fixture assembly
Silver 66 elements
Gold 93 components Larger or more complex workpieces

Why Is Swift-Fix Important?

Correctly fixturing a workpiece is an important part of achieving accurate and repeatable measurement results.
Swift-Fix simplifies the operator's task by providing versatile components that can be combined to create fixtures for different parts. Rather than designing and manufacturing a dedicated fixture for every workpiece, operators can configure a suitable fixture using the modular system. This can help save time, increase repeatability and reduce the potential for measurement error.
In addition, an optional kinematic system enables repeatable and rapid change of fixtures, minimising set up times on a CMM. Due to the unique design, the kinematics are less sensitive to dirt or incorrect alignment, both of which would cause metrology issues. Shop floor operators simply place the fixture on a location plate, select the appropriate program, and the machine automatically measures the part. Kinematic base plates are available with tapped holes, or in a plain configuration for the creation of dedicated fixtures.

How Does Swift-Fix Work?

A Swift-Fix setup is created by combining a suitable base plate with the required fixturing elements. The components can be assembled to create a fixture configuration for the workpiece being measured.
Once a fixture has been configured, its position can be documented using the alpha-numeric references on the base plate. This makes it possible to reproduce the same fixture setup when required.
For applications using the optional kinematic system, fixtures can be changed quickly and repeatedly. The fixture is placed on a location plate and the appropriate measurement program is selected, allowing the machine to automatically measure the part.
